Un diablillo “demasiado amistoso”

Una escultura de un diablo en la ciudad española de Segovia ha sido criticada por ser demasiado sonriente. El Ayuntamiento encargó la estatua para celebrar la leyenda de su acueducto romano —que, según cuentan, fue construido por el diablo en una sola noche para conquistar a una dama— y también para atraer a los turistas a los barrios menos visitados. Sin embargo, los vecinos dicen que el diablo, que sonríe y se hace una selfie con un móvil, parece demasiado amigable. Un grupo de vecinos incluso lanzó una petición en internet afirmando que la estatua no es lo suficientemente “repulsiva y despreciable” para constituir una representación auténtica del demonio y que podría atraer “turismo satánico”. Un juez ha desestimado la queja y la concejala de Patrimonio de Segovia, Claudia de Santos, dice que la instalación seguirá adelante.

‘Too friendly’ devil

A sculpture of Satan in the Spanish city of Segovia has been criticised for being too jolly. The local council commissioned the statue to celebrate the legend that its Roman aqueduct was built by the devil in a single night to seduce a lady – and to get tourists into less-visited neighbourhoods. However, residents are saying that the devil, who is smiling and taking a selfie with a smartphone, looks too friendly. A local group even launched an online petition claiming the statue is insufficiently ‘repulsive and despicable’ to constitute an accurate representation of Satan and that it might attract ‘Satanic tourism’. A judge has now dismissed the complaint, and Segovia’s heritage councillor, Claudia de Santos, says that the installation will go ahead.
