Spanish newspapers and magazines

Hispanic London

Whenever we are learning a foreign language it is important to get to know the culture not only through the grammar or teaching words, but through the speech in newspapers and magazines.

Yes, I know you are thinking… but how do I get free Spanish newspapers or magazines about London and how am I going to understand them??

Well here in London we are lucky to find different online magazines and newspapers to keep us aware about Hispanic life in London: events, news, sports, festivals, gossips… And just taking a glance at headlines gives us an idea about the topic and if we might be interested in it.

Here is a selection of the best and most known Spanish magazines and newspapers in London:

EL IBÉRICO

El Iberico

Ibérico Gratuito is the only fortnightly newspaper written in Spanish for the Spanish Community in London. It was created after many Spanish people came to London to live and work and wanted a communication related to Hispanic events or news. It was born from a need to inform and create links in the Spanish Community in London.

You can find it printed in Stations such as: Victoria, Charing Cross, St James Park, Queensway, Tower Hill, Baker Street, Camden Town, etc… or check online for free at http://www.eliberico.com/

    Muchos gracias Carmen !!! 🙂

It’s great that you’re writing about this as it is very helpful. I am very interested in journalism so I usually browse through broad range of newspapers and mags. I aim at reading at least one Spanish article per week and that can be anything from El Pais, La Nacion (S. America), Telesur (website). Now I will be reading some more 🙂 Thanks

    Hola Maciej!
Muchas gracias por tu comentario! 🙂
I am glad you like it! Some of my friends used to be journalist in Spain and I get to know their existence because of them.
It was not until I had been in London for two years when I heard about them. There is a very important Hispanic community in London and they always have something going on so the best way to be in touch was to create these magazines and newspapers to make people aware of all the best bits of Hispanic culture here 😉
It would be interesting to get an article from some students who could be interested in writing in Spanish, would anyone accept the challenge? 😉 Maybe you?

Sounds like a good idea!!! 🙂 I could try as much as I can though it may be quite basic at first but it definitely could help me learn more (regardless of the quality) 😀 I find writing useful in learning a language even if it’s a short 250 word passage. The issue is usually the time but since it’s a kind of ad hoc thing- I might try to write something within the next two weeks see how it goes 🙂

Very useful information! Apart from the Spanish newspapers that we can read online, like http://www.elpais.com for instance, we can read this newspapers and magazines so we know what is happening in London related to Spanish culture. I know that you can find “El Ibérico” for free in Instituto Cervantes of London, and also in some Spanish restaurants, like the one in Shoreditch “Tapas Revolution”, I saw the other day 🙂

Gracias Carmen for bringing very useful information for our students as I’m sure they will enjoy reading those magazines not just to practise their reading skill but also to get to now what’s on in London regarding the Spanish culture.
Like Diana says and I also recommended in “Not just a bedtime story” blog, there’re also Spanish papers online with very interesting and varied articles 🙂

Gracias Carmen! I was familiar with a few of them but not with all. I will pass this information on to my students! It’s great to have access to news papers and magazines in Spanish here in London and I like the fact that you can get them in paper! 🙂 You don’t have to worry about wifi connections to be able to read something in Spanish when commuting. Reading Spanish news papers and magazines is an excellent way to practice the grammar and learn new vocabulary and it is also very good to be informed about Spanish and Latin American events 😉 Fantástico Carmen!
