El “juicio del siglo” español
Hace dos meses publicamos un blog sobre el inicio del “juicio del siglo”, como se ha denominado en España: el juicio a 12 líderes catalanes independentistas, incluido el ex vicepresidente catalán Oriol Junqueras. Los 12 acusados se enfrentan a cargos de rebelión, sedición y malversación de fondos públicos, en su mayoría relacionados con el referéndum ilegal de independencia celebrado en octubre de 2017.
Nueve semanas después, el juicio está lejos de terminar, y se ha convertido en una oportunidad de oro para que los partidos de extrema derecha muestren su agenda anti-separatista. Una peculiaridad del sistema judicial español permite que cualquiera se convierta en co-acusador y participe en los procedimientos judiciales, como lo ha hecho Vox en el juicio de los líderes catalanes. Por eso, los expertos dicen que el “juicio del siglo” podría ayudar a la extrema derecha en las próximas elecciones generales, que se celebrarán el 28 de abril.
Recientemente, el primer ministro español, Pedro Sánchez, comparó la salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea con el movimiento independentista catalán, argumentando que la retórica, en ambos casos, ha llevado a un callejón sin salida.

Two months ago we published a blog about the start of the “trial of the century,” as it has been dubbed in Spain: the trial of 12 Catalan pro-independence leaders, including former Catalan vice-president Oriol Junqueras. The 12 face charges including rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds, mostly linked to the illegal independence referendum held in October 2017.
Nine weeks later, the trial is far from over, and it has become a golden opportunity for far-right parties to put their anti-separatist agenda on display. A quirk of the Spanish justice system allows anyone to become a co-accuser and take part in court proceedings, as far-right Vox have done in the Catalan leaders’ trial. Because of this, experts are saying that the “trial of the century” could help the far right in the upcoming general election, which will be held on April 28.
Recently, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez compared the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union with the Catalan independence movement, arguing that the rhetoric in both cases has led societies down a blind alley.
